There are many different types of female body shapes — each of them beautiful in its own way. They can be easily explained using fruit or actual shapes. You may have heard of an “hourglass” figure, or the famous “apple” shape. Some are curvy, have narrower hips or broad shoulders. However, most of us fall into a few broad categories listed below.

Female Body Shapes: Apple
Apple body shape is known for having a larger bust as compared to the hip section. It is the opposite of the pear body shape. The waist is usually undefined waist with a small hips, skinny legs and arms and round shoulders.
In terms of fat distribution, they tend to put on weight first in the upper body section than the rest. People with this body type gain more on their upper body than the lower.

Rectangle Body Shape
The rectangle body shape is also be referred to as the “Athletic” type. Generally your waist is not as well defined, and your weight is distributed evenly throughout your body.
Rectangular female body shapes are known for having the similar measurements on all the sections of their bodies. To simply put it, the measurements of your waist, bust and hips are generally very close. It is also called a ruler or supermodel body.
Characteristics of the rectangle:
- There is no defined waist
- The hips tend to have a similar width as the shoulders
- You do not have a lot of curves
- Your bust tends to be small or average
Female Body Shapes: The Hourglass
The hourglass is one of the most common female body shapes you will find. This female body shape is the most proportionate and balanced of all. This body shape is often envied by most people.
It is characterized by a defined waist and well-balanced buttocks and bust line. Your shoulders are usually slightly round, aligning perfectly with your hips and your legs are in proportion with your upper body.
Characteristics of the hourglass:
- You have a defined waist
- Hip and bust are almost the same measurements
- Pronounced curves
Inverted Triangle Body Shape
The Inverted triangle body shape is very similar to the apple shape. It characterized by broad shoulders and narrow hips. Your upper body is voluminous than your lower body and should be accentuated to draw away attention from the waist.
Characteristics of the inverted rectangle:
- Shoulders maybe wider than the hip
- Bust tends to be usually large
- Additionally hips are small
Female Body Shapes: Pear
Pear shape is also geometrically referred to as a triangle-body shape. It actually makes up only a small percentage of body shapes. They have a small bust, a relatively small waist with large hips and bottom.
In terms of dress sizes, a good example would be a woman who wears a size 8 on top but a 12 on the bottom. If you have large hips and a tiny bust, you have a pear body shape or triangle-shaped body. You have broad hips, your lower body is more muscular, giving a triangular appearance.

- Fat tends to accumulate on your lower half (hips and buttocks)
